The year of digital: Marketing during a pandemic

As the Social Media Manager for Lions, I am responsible for the day-to-day running of all our social accounts. These accounts include the following;

Facebook: LionsSAOfficial01
Twitter: @LionsSAOfficial
Instagram: @lionssports.academy
LinkedIn: Lions Sports Academy

It’s a challenging and enjoyable role, where no two days are the same. One minute I could be creating a graphic to advertise one of our sports camps, the next I am responding to an England rugby player.

Coronavirus has created an eclectic feeling of uncertainty in the past year. The ramifications of the virus are likely to stretch on for years to come.

Social Media Manager Connor

At the start of the pandemic, when the furlough scheme was announced, many people were uncertain where they would stand with their employment. Some of my colleagues were placed on furlough and we had to part company with others. My position became even more prevalent.

The switch to online, whether it be via video calls, emails, or social media, means my job is more important than ever.

One of the most exciting things I have worked on, during the course of the pandemic, was the delivery of online coaching. Coronavirus prevented us from delivering coaching in person so, during the first lockdown, we launched a fitness programme aimed at children. It had almost 3,000 impressions on our initial launch video on Facebook and over 400 people signed up to receive workout videos.

We have since changed the model and delivery of our online coaching and we’ve some exciting plans coming soon, so do stay tuned!

I’ve learned a lot about social media over the last year, from what makes a post really ‘roar’ (pun completely inexcusable) to reading into the numbers through analytics. I am constantly growing and I’ve still got plenty to learn.

This year has been a rollercoaster. Although COVID has prevented us from delivering business as usual, our online presence continues to grow. We’ve been able to build on our current relationships and even forge new ones. Lions have adapted so well, in fact, that we are thriving.

As I assimilate the events of the past year, I will look forward to 2021 in hope of a return to normality. Here’s to another year of learning, growth and success!
