"He certainly won a number of fans personally and supporters for Quins today". This is what Roger Brosch, Wimbledonian Warriors RFC Junior Chairman, said about Harlequins Fly-Half Marcus Smith after he joined Lions for a coaching at Wimbledonian Warriors RFC last Sunday.
These words will be of no surpise to many, considering Marcus is highly rated both within the Harlequins community and by fans of English rugby. Marcus proved to be a very popular choice amongst the kids; who seemed to get stuck in and will have learnt some new skills under the tutelage of the Harlequins ace.
The session was focused very much on developing the attacking side of the kids game. This was emphasised from the start as the warm up included games that concentrated on agility as well as footwork & movement. Marcus provided coaching tips throughout the session and watched on intently as the kids took part in attacking drills such as 2 on 1s & 1 on 1s. Marcus' value as a premiership fly-half shone through the most when he helped teach the kids about attacking lines off 9 & 10. If there was one man who I would trust with this, it would probably be Marcus, considering he is in charge of orchestrating a Harlequins backline week in week out that is full of attacking flare.
We all know that Marcus is a very gifted rugby player and is destined to go far in the game but he is also a very humble man. He showed this by staying long after the session had ended to take part in a Q & A session with the kids, as well as taking photos with them.
It was great to have Marcus join us on Sunday and we hope that we will have the opportunity for him to join us again at some point!
